Weston Brown

Weston Brown was raised inside a fervent evangelical movement devoted to building a “Christian Army” to repopulate the earth. Homeschooled alongside eight younger siblings, he was taught that birth control was sinful, public schools were indoctrination, and obedience was sacred. As his family deepened into apocalyptic fear and political extremism, Weston carried a secret that their world had no safe place for: he was queer.

In his early twenties he came out and was cut off from his siblings overnight. Years later he traveled home to confront his past and speak publicly against censorship. The response was covered by People, NBC, and international media. Part of the story became the subject of The Librarians, an award-winning documentary that has now reached audiences across the world.

Today, Weston is an author, speaker, and advocate for representation, education, and awareness of the dangers of censorship and extremist ideologies. His memoir, Banned, is the story of what happens when extremism and certainty are handed to a child. And this is what it takes to become, yourself, anyway.
