Sharon G. Flake

Flake - headshotSharon Flake has worked in a foster care program, as a house parent for youth placed temporarily in shelters, and in public relations for the University of Pittsburgh. Her 1998 debut novel, THE SKIN I’M IN, was recognized with the prestigious Coretta Scott King/John Steptoe New Talent award. Since then, she has published many more books, including MONEY HUNGRY and WHO AM I WITHOUT HIM?, both of which received Coretta Scott King Honor Awards. Her work has appeared on numerous best books of the year lists, including YALSA Quick Picks for Reluctant Readers, YALSA Best Books for Young Adult Readers, LA Times Recommended Books for Teens, VOYA Top Shelf Fiction for Middle School, Book Sense Children’s Picks, and Booklist Editor’s Choice. Her books have been named to many state reading lists, including the Texas Lone Star Reading List, and have also been used as a centerpiece for numerous school reading initiatives, such as those in New Orleans and Rochester, NY. Her most recent novel, UNSTOPPABLE OCTOBIA MAY, was named to the Cooperative Children’s Book Center Choice (CCBC) Best of the Best List, and the audio edition was recognized as a 2015 Audie Award Nominee. Sharon has recently added picture book author to her credentials, too! Her book YOU ARE NOT A CAT will be illustrated by Anna Raff. Sharon grew up in Philadelphia and currently lives in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.
